Portfolio Review: Elevating Emerging Photographers

Since 2013, Düsseldorf photo weekend has hosted the Portfolio Review, an annual photography prize that elevates 15 talented emerging photographers. Taking center stage, each artist presents their portfolio to industry pros – including high profile curators, artists and art consultants – who in return provide feedback, tips and opportunities to collaborate.

This year, prizes were awarded to Thomas Albdorf, Caspar Sänger, Jiatu Gu, Luuk Smits and Esther Hovers for their outstanding work, spanning snapshots of abstracted shards, suspended objects and domestic scenes. The works have been grouped together in the official Portfolio Review 2016 publication which is available to buy for €10. If you’d like to order a copy, you can do so by emailing your request to info@portfolio-review.de.

It wasn’t just the high calibre of work that made 2016 a stand out year however —  it also marked a new technical partnership with ascribe.

The Portfolio Review and ascribe joined forces, to combine a shared vision that supports photographers and puts them back at the helm of their creative practice.

The Portfolio Review champions a unique and transparent approach to judging. We at ascribe provide photographers, or any creators, with an easy way to protect the title of their work, to sell limited digital editions and to set their own licensing parameters. Cooperations such as these, allow photographers to share their images with confidence, because once registered with ascribe, they will always be attributed for their work no matter where it spreads.

The exchange is that artists enter information such as name, title and date of the work’s creation along with bios and exhibition texts. ascribe provides the tools to register and timestamp each submitted work and store it in our secure, private cloud. The art prize can then use our rating system and archive which streamlines and sorts the shortlisted portfolios.

“As our technology partner, ascribe supported us by providing a tailor-made submission platform allowing for a very smooth and and user-friendly submission process… It is their forward thinking mindset that makes working with them enjoyable and inspirational. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with ascribe to further discover and support exceptional young talents in photography.”

– Producer of the Portfolio Review, Shahin Zarinbal

The Portfolio Review is the most recent prize to have proudly been added to our list of partners, joining Berlin Art Prize, Lumen Art Prize and Sluice_ screens. We believe it’s exchanges like these that are advancing the art world, creating an ecosystem that is more fair and transparent for creators, platforms and collectors.
